How exactly do I start the siphon effect?

Simply submerge the heavy metal valve end completely into the source liquid. Point the other open end into your receiving container (which must be lower than the source). Shake the submerged valve rapidly up and down a few times until the liquid flows over the peak of the hose. Gravity does the rest!
